Deck Material Calculator — Boards & Fasteners

Estimate deck boards, linear feet, planning joists, screws or hidden fasteners, layout waste, and cost.

Quick answer

Deck-board quantity starts with the number of board rows across the deck and the total linear feet those rows require. Board width, gap, stock length, layout waste, joist spacing, fastener system, and structural design all affect the final order.

Your planning estimate29 deck boards

192 sq ft · 26 board rows · 13 planning joists · 710 fasteners.

  • Joists (planning count)13 joists
  • Deck screws8 boxes

The straight layout uses at least 5% allowance; the calculator applied 10%.

Joist quantity is a shopping-planning count only. A code-compliant plan must determine joist size, span, beams, posts, footings, ledger attachment, hardware, loads, and local permit requirements.

Use the decking manufacturer's actual board width, gapping, joist-spacing, and fastener instructions when they differ.

Use it well

Step by step

  1. 1

Enter the board-run length, the deck width across the rows, and the actual board face width and gap.

  2. 2

Choose the layout and waste allowance, then round the required linear footage up to complete stock boards.

  3. 3

Use the joist and fastener results for early budgeting only; confirm the complete framing plan, spans, connections, footing design, code, and manufacturer instructions.

Worked example

Check the estimate before you buy

Estimate deck-board rows, total linear feet, full stock boards, planning joists, screws or hidden fasteners, and material cost.

Example

A 16 × 12 ft deck using 5.5 in boards with a 1/8 in gap needs 26 board rows. At 16 ft per row, that is 416 linear feet; with 10% waste, the order rounds to 29 full 16 ft boards. At 16 in joist spacing, the early layout estimate shows 13 joists and about 710 face screws.

How the calculation works

The calculator divides deck width by board face width plus gap and rounds up to complete rows. Rows × board-run length gives net linear feet; layout waste is added before dividing by stock-board length. Joists and fasteners use editable spacing and fastening assumptions for planning, not structural design.

Planning checklist

Before you place the order

  • Use actual board dimensions and available stock lengths, not only nominal names.
  • Increase allowance for diagonal, picture-frame, breaker-board, or complex layouts.
  • Confirm joist spans, beam and footing design, ledger connections, corrosion resistance, fastener compatibility, permits, and local code.
Common questions

Deck Material Calculator — Boards & Fasteners FAQ

Should I buy exactly the calculated amount of decking?

Usually no. Cuts, spillage, breakage, uneven surfaces, batch matching, and package rounding can increase the order. Use the editable allowance and confirm the product label.

Why does the result round up?

Stores sell full bags, boxes, cans, rolls, panels, or pieces. The tool keeps the mathematical amount visible, then rounds the purchasing quantity up separately.

How much waste should I add for deck boards?

Simple straight runs may need less than diagonal or picture-frame layouts. The calculator enforces a small layout minimum, but the selected product, stock lengths, board quality, pattern, and installer determine the final allowance.

Does this calculator design the deck framing?

No. The joist count is a spacing-based planning figure only. A code-compliant structural design must address spans, loads, beams, posts, footings, connections, ledger details, frost depth, and site conditions.
