Drywall Calculator — Sheets, Mud, Tape & Screws

Estimate drywall sheets for walls and ceilings, then build a first-pass list for screws, tape, compound, waste, and cost.

Quick answer

Drywall sheets are estimated from wall and optional ceiling area, divided by sheet coverage and rounded up after waste. Sheet orientation, openings, fire or moisture ratings, and finish level affect the real material list.

Your planning estimate15 drywall sheets

463.1 sq ft to purchase, plus about 464 screws, 172 ft tape, and 28 lb compound.

Panel type, thickness, framing, fire/moisture requirements, and local code must be confirmed for the assembly.

Use it well

Step by step

  1. 1

Enter room dimensions, wall height, included ceilings, openings, and the sheet size you can safely handle.

  2. 2

Select waste for room complexity and round the result up to complete sheets.

  3. 3

Treat screws, tape, compound, and corner bead as planning quantities and verify the assembly specification before buying.

Worked example

Check the estimate before you buy

Estimate drywall sheets for walls and ceilings plus screws, joint tape, compound, waste, and sheet cost.

Example

A 12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls and ceiling has 472 gross sq ft before openings. After subtracting one door and two windows and adding waste, divide by 32 sq ft for 4 × 8 sheets.

How the calculation works

Wall perimeter × height minus openings produces wall area. Optional ceiling area and waste are added before dividing by the selected panel area. USG planning ratios estimate finishing supplies.

Planning checklist

Before you place the order

  • Select panel type and thickness for the actual assembly.
  • Longer panels can reduce joints but must fit access and handling constraints.
  • Confirm framing, fastener spacing, moisture/fire requirements, and local code.
Common questions

Drywall Calculator — Sheets, Mud, Tape & Screws FAQ

Should I buy exactly the calculated amount of drywall?

Usually no. Cuts, spillage, breakage, uneven surfaces, batch matching, and package rounding can increase the order. Use the editable allowance and confirm the product label.

Why does the result round up?

Stores sell full bags, boxes, cans, rolls, panels, or pieces. The tool keeps the mathematical amount visible, then rounds the purchasing quantity up separately.

Are walls and ceiling both included?

Walls are included by default; the ceiling is included only when selected.

Does this choose drywall thickness?

No. Thickness and panel type depend on the assembly, framing, rating, moisture exposure, product instructions, and local code.
