Tile Calculator

Estimate tile pieces and full boxes from surface size, actual tile dimensions, grout spacing, waste, and price.

Quick answer

Tile count comes from the tiled surface and the installed module size, including grout joints. Pattern cuts, breakage, future repairs, and full-box packaging make the purchase quantity higher than the exact piece count.

Use it well

Step by step

  1. 1

Measure the actual tiled surface and enter the tile’s manufactured width and length.

  2. 2

Include the intended grout joint and select waste for the layout and number of cuts.

  3. 3

Round up to full boxes and verify dye-lot availability before ordering a separate repair reserve.

Worked example

Check the estimate before you buy

Estimate individual tiles and full boxes from surface dimensions, actual tile size, grout joint, waste, and package count.

Example

A 10 × 10 ft surface laid with nominal 12 × 12 in tile is roughly 100 layout pieces. A 10% allowance produces about 110 pieces before rounding to full boxes.

How the calculation works

The tool counts positions across and down using the entered tile face and joint, applies waste, then rounds the result to the selected pieces per box.

Planning checklist

Before you place the order

  • Measure an actual tile when nominal and actual dimensions differ.
  • Dry-lay or map focal lines before ordering patterned tile.
  • Order matching dye lots and keep spare tile for future repairs.
Common questions

Tile Calculator FAQ

Should I buy exactly the calculated amount of tile?

Usually no. Cuts, spillage, breakage, uneven surfaces, batch matching, and package rounding can increase the order. Use the editable allowance and confirm the product label.

Why does the result round up?

Stores sell full bags, boxes, cans, rolls, panels, or pieces. The tool keeps the mathematical amount visible, then rounds the purchasing quantity up separately.

Does grout spacing reduce the number of tiles?

It can slightly change the layout count, but cuts and pattern alignment usually matter more. The tool includes the entered joint in the across-and-down estimate.

Do I need more tile for diagonal layouts?

Usually yes because diagonal and complex patterns create more cuts. Increase the waste field using the installer or manufacturer recommendation.
